Our journey then took us to Detroit, MI, the site of the wedding for Matt and Carly! Riley stayed with a friendly dog sitter while we got up to our activities. After getting over the initial awkwardness of driving around Detroit in our Toyota RAV4, Saturday night brought us to the waterfront for a rehearsal dinner with a warm welcome from the bride and groom, lots of smiles with friends, and the realization that we could practically swim to Canada from there. Claire would be welcomed in as a citizen but no luck for Paul…

On the wedding day itself we started off with a friends reunion brunch full of coffee at the Hudson Cafe followed by some last-minute wardrobe finalizations, then off to the Garden Theater for the wedding itself. It was especially emotional for the couple as they remembered their Dads, which really touched us, and was a reminder to live life to the fullest for each other. In that spirit, we enjoyed a splendid time of dancing, good food, enabled by the best live band we’ve heard at a wedding to date. And the “Burger King” even made an appearance (to Paul’s great shock!)

Monday was a groggy return to the working world but a great opportunity to practice working from anywhere – Claire posted up in the hotel room, Paul in the lobby. It worked better than expected and gave us a little breathing room before getting a good night’s sleep for our drive west across Michigan and into Wisconsin.

Detroit’s comeback as a city is slow but coming along. We saw no less than 20 pedal bars over the course of the visit, but not a huge amount of other activities. Despite that, we had some nice beer to round out Friday night and heard about other spots to check out on a future visit (house music, anyone?)
